I don’t think it’s likely that any of the largest streaming services will merge. One reason is that nearly all of them belong to very large corporations that would not be allowed to merge with each other for antitrust reasons. The only pure play among the big services is Netflix, and even a merger of Netflix with another major service might be seen as anticompetitive.

What could happen is consolidation among the second and third tier services. They could either be bought by one of the big players, or themselves merge to form something more competitive with the big ones. Deals like acquisition of The Criterion Channel or a merger of Acorn TV and Britbox are real possibilities.

In the US, I’m counting Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, Prime Video, CBS All Access, and Peacock among the services that are too big to merge. Apple is a special case; its position in movie and TV production is minimal so it might be allowed to acquire Netflix, but merging with or acquiring any of the other huge companies on the list would not fly, not to mention being financially infeasible. Other countries will have their own lists.
