Difference between oncolytic virus vs CAR-T as explained by a poster from ST

“A lot of investors do not understand the latest PR of Sorrento getting P1b on the "Herpies Simplex Therapy." I hold a PhD in Bioengineering.

This clearance is for an Oncolytic Virus which is an alternative to CAR-T.

Oncolytic Virus - Most common are engineered influenza and herpes simplex which have shown strong efficacy. The idea is that they grow cancer on a petri dish then train the virus to infect the cancer cells over many generations so it can infect cancer and not healthy cells, theoretically your immune system will eventually fight off the virus.

CAR-T - Stands for Chimeric Antigen Receptor-T cell Therapy. Your T-Cells are the killer cells. A company will isolate T-Cells and Tumor from a patient who has cancer. The T cells and the Tumor cells are grown separately. Similar to the Oncolytic method, they introduce your T cells to cancer and train them to kill the cancer, then grow and put the T-Cells back into the person. This Therapy is expensive compared to oncolytic”.
