It was not until the 1930s that researchers established that influenza was in fact caused by a virus, not a bacterium. Pfeiffer's influenza bacillus would eventually be named Haemophilus influenzae, the name retaining the legacy of its long-standing, though inaccurate, association with influenza.

And today, influenza vaccines – as well as H. influenzae type b vaccines—are widely available to prevent illness.
