My old Chevy step side is a short bed 1/2 ton. I have always called the engine "gutless". Even when it was new, when only loaded for tent camping, it felt like I needed to get out and push on mountain grades.

You recommendation for the 350 is excellent. That was one of Chevy's best engines.

I'll talk to my hot rod builder neighbor. I was hoping I could mod the existing engine and get some more power as it has really low mileage and I'm sure the other things I need to do to the truck are going to be expensive.

But yes, the 350 would be great! The automatic tranny in this model isn't the greatest either. Some called this automatic the "explode-a-matic" tranny. It has a pretty bad rep.

It will depend on what it all is going to cost.
