We built an addition onto our house years ago. My plan was to put a root cellar under the addition like my Grandfather had back in the day: dirt floor with tiered dirt walls for taters, onions, apples, canned goods, etc.
Of course, the contractor had to get a building permit. We ended up with a concrete & rebar equivalent of a fallout shelter to get the permit. Oh well, I guess we are ready for Armageddon!
The moral of this story: If you build a root cellar, do whatever you can to keep the county building authorities in the dark!
