At the compiler level, you could just emulate the instructions
with other instructions in the backend. That would allow the
compiler developers to add the new mnemonics for the instructions which could then allow developers to play around with their code. They just couldn't do any real performance analysis.

Ideally, they'd give a few seed machines out to developers to
actually test the real thing.

Microsoft has been incredibly slow in SIMD instruction support.
Even the Intel compilers don't seem to be ready to go when there's a new SIMD instruction set out.

I haven't had the time to play around with VS2005 SP1 to see if
SSE3 support is available. I would doubt that SSSE3 support is in giving that I didn't see any mention of it nor any kind of reasonable beta testing.
