In reality you can never totally ignore a member. With filter on, you won't see that members posts in the thread and will not receive PM's at all.
But you can always read their posts if desired by clicking on the reply from another poster that is responding to the member you ignored.

You can then click on 'go to main board' from that message page and even respond to them if you wish. The only way to totally ignore a member is to never click on a responded message of another member and have the filter turned on.
