It happened already several times when Intel pushed something really hard but it didn't take off. They did a pretty fast i860 cpu, I think it was one of the fastest in industry - but it died by some reason. They did a pretty fast Rambus-based chipset - but industry didn't like it. They can make desktop IPF, but they will sell one per five iMac's sold.
