Most of the farmers who converted to corn and soybeans during the ethanol boom and had fairly good operations became multimillionaires and gobbled up the small farms over the last 20 years, at least in the northern plains where my family has several farmers. Nephews that barely made it through high school now have their own planes, winter homes in arizona, and lake cabins in Minnesota. And are so republican that they glow in the dark. they don't particularly like trump, and never did, as honesty is one of their characteristics, but they could care less who is in charge as long as the gravy train continues. The federally backed crop insurance is at obscene levels, if you get your crop in the ground, you know that you will win even if you get wiped out by weather, with almost zero risk any more. Another case of socializing risk and privatizing profit.
