As part of our Robots to the Rescue: Combating IUU Fishing live demonstration in the Dana Point State Marine Conservation Area in California, we tasked the WAM-V to collect bathymetric survey data while on patrol as a secondary mission. We used a NORBIT Subsea multi-beam sonar and Qinsy from QPS for the data collection. The survey equipment was controlled remotely by James Coleman from his office in Idaho. A big thank you to NORBIT Subsea, QPS and James Coleman for their support.

A bathymetric survey, sometimes referred to as a fathometric survey, is a type of hydrographic (water-based) survey that maps the depths and shapes of underwater terrain to illustrate the land that lies below.

Bathymetric surveyors work to obtain an exact representative image of the seabed and identify specific elevations, anomalies, and the presence of any scour around submerged structures. They also analyze and define the surrounding shorelines, tides, currents, and waves to create a better model of the area features overall.

Pretty sophisticated toys imo.

This acquisition isn't necessarily targeting defense but still could, instead, IUU fishing which costs an estimated 23 billion in 2018.
Illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing activities violate both national and international fishing regulations. IUU fishing is a global problem that threatens ocean ecosystems and sustainable fisheries. It also threatens our economic security and the natural resources that are critical to global food security, and it puts law-abiding fishermen and seafood producers in the United States and abroad at a disadvantage.
