Not unusual at all. There is extended hours trading. I trade all the time in premarket and in after hours. I can't do it with any stocks trading on the otc/pinks, but without a doubt people do it everyday. Depending on your brokerage you have a window before the market opens to buy or sell. I have Etrade and I have to wait until 7am to be allowed to place trades in premarket. But there is activity even before 7am for others. And with after hours I can trade until 8pm. After that time all orders get cancelled.
I can tell you that it is not the same as trading during the day. Not as much volume so your orders don't fill as easy.
You really should look into it because a stock could get good or bad news in pre/after hours and you can get out or in before the crowd.
I have found that I prefer to sell in extended hours over buying. Many of the times I have purchased in pre market the stock drops more by opening bell.
