when i was a kid and saw one flew over the cuckoo's nest, i didn't realize it would be a metaphor for america's last days.

if you never saw it -- a sharp, free-wheeling anti-authoritarian populist named randle mcmurphy is falsely committed to a mental hospital, causes too much trouble calling out the system for its corruption, tries in vain to get everyone to bridge their silence and have fun together.

then he's lobotomized by "the state" and smothered by his best friend -- who couldn't stand to see what they did to him.

what good is money if we all lose our souls?

what good is friendship if the moment we broach meaningful issues, about fairness and community, the discussion gets too political and has to stop?

hat's off to a country that was pretty amazing while it lasted.
