Why would someone need to wait to claim a loss if declaring their position in RMTD to be worthless?

Anyone can declare their position to be worthless right now and the broker will execute that declaration tomorrow (nothing happens on Sunday), and the person can claim the loss on their 2021 taxes.

No sale is required.

It is not necessary to wait for the ticker symbol to be delisted.

A position in RMTD will already be accepted right now by eTrade (and therefore, I expect other brokers) as worthless because it basically is worthless right now.

There is no reason to make the claim before the last week in December but don't wait until the last day as your claim may have to have some lead time for your broker to act.
