And yes, i think of Penryn in the same way i thought of Willamette: An inferior product to its predecessor.

No, Penryn and friends are a shrink of NGMA with a few
enhancements.

A more accurate analogy and IMO far more likely scenario
is that Penryn will be to Merom what Northwood was to
Willamette - smaller die, lower marginal cost, bigger last
level cache, lower power, higher frequency, and a bit more
performance clock for clock aside from the effect of the
extra cache. A truly fearsome prospect for AMD and its
camp followers isn't it?
