Red Cross. Back in the 90's I followed a company called Sanguine, a Dr. Drees had devoted his whole life to creating a blood synthetic (substitute) and he did. Could be used far more effectively then human blood, carry far more oxygen, and didn't have all the storage problems, was safer also. Easy to produce and deliver and tons of life saving applications beyond transfusions and major surgeries. Went on for years and years FDA, Dept. of Defense et al wouldn't let it through.
After all was said and done, ended up it was the Red Cross lobbying hard to keep all blood substitutes from approval; and ever getting to market and they did. They would have lost their whole purpose, all their grant money, so on and so forth.
It's all about the science and though a bit off topic, it really isn't.
