That is actually an extraordinarily high incidence. A 1% mortality rate in any endeavor would be completely unacceptable. Would any sane person want to walk on a stairway, get in a vehicle, fly an aircraft, or even fly into space if the mortality rate of such an action were 1%?

And besides that, Covid can screw one up pretty badly without actually having to kill them.
