You couldn't get certs anyway, I suspect. DTC and other authorities have been pushing "dematerialization" for more than 20 years now. More and more companies have decided to stop dealing in them. DRS--the Direct Registration System--is offered by DTC even for penny stocks.
I'm not convinced that you can order a cert for just any company; some really don't want to deal in them. And if you do try, it'll cost you. Perhaps as much as $500. Trading in certs will take longer than using other methods.
Nobody wants to mess with certs anymore. They aren't necessary, and they screw up quick settlement.
