The study was done. Efficacy had been proven. The FDA granted emergency use authorization. It was proper and ethical to release the control group and allow them to choose whether to get the vaccine or not.

But a control group does remain in place. There is a segment of the population against which continued efficacy for the vaccinated population can be compared. If one is sitting at the table, looks around and can't pick out the sucker...
