The playing field is always changing and it's hard to keep up sometimes.

There were 33 million shares traded on the open exchanges today. QuiverQuant on Stocktwits reports the 'off exchange' had short sales of 6 million shares. 6 million short shares would certainly help bring the stock price down.

From what I gather, 'off exchange' is aka 'dark pools', which is supposedly a recent invention that allows large investment funds to trade shares without letting the retail investors know.

Does anybody here know how these dark pools operate? Are their buys, sells, and short sales ever reported publicly? Are their short sales added to the officially reported numbers each month? Is this why the markets don't seem to make sense anymore?

Any help to understand will be greatly appreciated.
