U.S. Patent Office Rules In Favor Of Nikola In Lawsuit Against Tesla Semi
APR 22, 2020 at 3:07PM

We wanted to check precisely what Milton was talking about, and we found Paper 7 of IPR2019-01646. That is a petition Tesla filed at the USPTO to question the patent's validity. Tesla does not think Nikola could even register its designs.
The ‘084 patent refers to the U.S. Patent 10,077,084, for the door design. Apparently, Tesla did not dispute the patents for the windscreen and bodywork design on USPTO. That is probably something exclusive to the lawsuit. It is filed in the District Court in Arizona under the code 2:18-cv-01344 and we did not manage to read it in full, nor to know its current status. In case you can help us with that, please get in touch.

The USPTO decision may prove to be decisive to the lawsuit result. If Nikola’s patent is valid and it manages to prove the Semi has copied it, the best-case scenario for Tesla is paying royalties to keep the Semi as it is. The other extreme is having to redesign it and also pay compensation for Nikola.

Nikola receives $1.7M grant from US Department of Energy for fuel cell research

https://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=157310976

The first fuel cells were invented by Sir William Grove in 1838. The first commercial use of fuel cells came more than a century later following the invention of the hydrogen–oxygen fuel cell by Francis Thomas Bacon in 1932. The alkaline fuel cell, also known as the Bacon fuel cell after its inventor, has been used in NASA space programs since the mid-1960s to generate power for satellites and space capsules. Since then, fuel cells have been used in many other applications. Fuel cells are used for primary and backup power for commercial, industrial and residential buildings and in remote or inaccessible areas. They are also used to power fuel cell vehicles, including forklifts, automobiles, buses, boats, motorcycles and submarines.

As of 2017, about 6500 FCEVs have been leased or sold worldwide.[95] Three fuel cell electric vehicles have been introduced for commercial lease and sale: the Honda Clarity, Toyota Mirai and the Hyundai ix35 FCEV. Additional demonstration models include the Honda FCX Clarity, and Mercedes-Benz F-Cell.[96] As of June 2011 demonstration FCEVs had driven more than 4,800,000 km (3,000,000 mi), with more than 27,000 refuelings.[97]Fuel cell electric vehicles feature an average range of 314 miles between refuelings.(98) They can be refueled in less than 5 minutes.(99) The U.S. Department of Energy's Fuel Cell Technology Program states that, as of 2011, fuel cells achieved 53–59% efficiency at one-quarter power and 42–53% vehicle efficiency at full power,(100) and a durability of over 120,000 km (75,000 mi) with less than 10% degradation.(101) In a Well-to-Wheels simulation analysis that "did not address the economics and market constraints", General Motors and its partners estimated that per mile traveled, a fuel cell electric vehicle running on compressed gaseous hydrogen produced from natural gas could use about 40% less energy and emit 45% less greenhouse gasses than an internal combustion vehicle.(102)(103) A lead engineer from the Department of Energy whose team is testing fuel cell cars said in 2011 that the potential appeal is that "these are full-function vehicles with no limitations on range or refueling rate so they are a direct replacement for any vehicle. For instance, if you drive a full sized SUV and pull a boat up into the mountains, you can do that with this technology and you can't with current battery-only vehicles, which are more geared toward city driving.
"[104]

In 2015, Toyota introduced its first fuel cell vehicle, the Mirai, at a price of $57,000.[105] Hyundai introduced the limited production Hyundai ix35 FCEV under a lease agreement.[106] In 2016, Honda started leasing the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell.[107]

Making the hydrogen
Nikola's early partnership with Nel Hydrogen is a positive sign. Nel has been around for 90 years, supplying water electrolysis machinery to industrial and commercial companies in Europe. Løkke told Ars that the company has never made hydrogen from methane; water electrolysis is its primary business. Though the company has primarily built systems for industrial use, it sees its partnership with Nikola as a valuable way to expand its market into transportation, building the many refueling stations that any serious attempt at a hydrogen freight network will need.

Startup Nikola Bets Hydrogen Will Finally Break Through With Big Rigs
Apr 14, 2019,09:30am EDT

For battery cars, it’s relatively simple to create public charging infrastructure to allow drivers to power up when parked, but even a fast charge can take 30 minutes or more. Fuel-cell cars can be refueled in about the same amount of time as those using gasoline, though the number of public stations dispensing compressed hydrogen gas in California, which has the most, is just 37 currently, clustered in the Bay Area, Los Angeles and Orange County and down to San Diego. Dozens more are planned, but like the extensive Supercharger network Musk has built up for Tesla owners, Nikola’s 700-station goal would be a game-changer for cross-country travel.

“If there’s suddenly this expansion of hydrogen infrastructure across the U.S., it’s a big deal,” said Craig Scott, national manager for Toyota’s U.S. advanced technologies group. “It would be a very good thing to have more hydrogen stations opening up–more is more.”

Toyota has sold Mirai hydrogen sedans in California and Japan for the past few years, and operates two fuel-cell trucks at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, with more on the way. It’s even building a hydrogen plant at the ports, making the fuel from waste material, to power its fleet.

Collaboration Brings More Hydrogen Stations
Shell currently operates two hydrogen refueling stations in California
, located in Newport Beach and Torrance. Additionally, in collaboration with Honda and Toyota, Shell is bringing seven new hydrogen refueling stations to the state; three in the city of San Francisco, and one in each of Berkeley, Sacramento, Citrus Heights and Walnut Creek. The hydrogen refueling stations will be installed in strategic locations within the existing network of Shell-branded retail stations, offering existing and future fuel cell electric vehicle drivers high-quality service with simple and straightforward car refueling in minutes.

Shell to cut up to 9,000 jobs in shift to low-carbon energy
9/30/2020
Royal Dutch Shell will slash as many as 9,000 jobs as the oil giant accelerates a shift away from fossil fuels.

The Anglo-Dutch company said Wednesday that it would cut between 7,000 and 9,000 positions by the end of 2022, potentially affecting more than 10% of its workforce. The total includes 1,500 people who have volunteered to leave the company this year.

The job losses are part of an overhaul aimed at cutting costs and simplifying the company's structure as it moves into low-carbon energy. Shell expects the overhaul to deliver annual cost savings of up to $2.5 billion by 2022.
