Brilacidin is not a vaccine and works in an entirely different way. Here's my layman's understanding of what we're dealing with.

A vaccine generates a pseudo-infection that looks similar to SARS-COV that is weak and easily handled. In this case it is the spike protein part of the virus. The immune system then, in relative safety, learns the pattern and develops antibodies which destroy the spike protein. When the body is then exposed to real SARS-COV virus it spends less time learning and ramps right to killing since it knows how to.

Brilacidin is an antibiotic/antiviral. It's molecules directly damage bacteria and viruses in various ways - interferes with replication, shreds their outer layer, etc. It does not teach the immune system anything about the invader and does not provide lasting resistance/immunity.

Brilacidin is also an anti-inflammatory. What kills many people with COVID is a cytokine storm which gets out of hand when the immune system goes into over drive. Brilacidin reduces this effect by mediating this response and also by doing some of the heavy lifting as an antiviral.

At least that's what we hope to hear happens when the trial data comes in.
