I linked to this interesting Duke U. article on the DD board yesterday about young Ben Graham. 1914 was an utterly different era in stock investing. On the plus side, public companies would sometimes understate assets to hide them. Ben Graham was good at ferreting out such kickers.

In depth, audited reporting didn't become common for many years yet. Graham did a lot of shorting but only as a hedge. No doubt he would have used options had they existed.
