ENVIRONMENT TOPS EU BUSINESS LEADERS' LIST OF CONCERNS

Business leaders in Europe regard environmental protection as the top priority for politicians, a study out today has found, writes Fiona Harvey in London.
Respondents to the UPS Europe Business Monitor ranked the environment above economic growth and securing energy supplies, when asked what the top issues for global political leaders should be.
About 45 per cent of executives rated environmental concerns top, compared with four in 10 ranking economic growth the main priority. A third said securing energy supplies was most important, followed by reducing world poverty, avoiding wars and fighting terrorism, and promoting education.
French business people were keenest on the environment, with 64 per cent rating it the top priority for politics, while the UK came second with 56 per cent giving it the top priority.
A majority across Europe said environment was the issue that most divided the EU and US.
Six in 10 felt Europe should stake its energy future on wind, hydrogen and solar power, with nuclear power earning the support of nearly a third.
