I never said AMD was altruistic; they would balance price
and profitablity against market share gains (keeping in mind
their capacity limits also).

Well there's the rub. AMD started to believe their own
press clippings and got greedy. Now Intel is lowering
the boom and burning them largely on the fallout of its
own grandiose expansionist plans.
