From the visit of Vice President Kamala Harris to Mexico, the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on International Cooperation between Mexico and the United States stands out.
Vice President Harris expressed special interest in the role that Mexico has in the security of the United States, for this reason she stated that confidence should be strengthened and American investments should be facilitated in Mexico, particularly in the south of the country.
Kamala Harris emphasized that Mexico should allow investment by US companies in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
It is important to highlight the geoeconomic importance of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, which is located in the geographical region located between the states of Oaxaca, Veracruz, Tabasco and Chiapas in Mexico and is the narrowest area between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, in addition to being a region rich in oil, timber resources, mining and biodiversity
The United States commits Mexico, through a package of grants and loans, to boost growth in southern Mexico. For this, 250 million dollars will be invested in new investments to promote infrastructure development, in addition to organizing trade missions.
It is important to note that, so far, there are no new investments by US companies in southern Mexico where there is a greater presence of Chinese companies that are investing. For example, the parastatal China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) is co-investing in the construction of the first section of the Maya Train in an agreement with the Mota-Engil México Consortium, Grupo Cosh, Eyasa and Gavil Ingeniería. The Chinese company will invest more than 630 million dollars in the route.
Likewise, to finance the construction of the Dos Bocas refinery, in the municipality of Paraíso, Tabasco, the Chinese banks, Banco Industrial y Comercial de China (ICBC) and the Bank of China, participate with around 600 million dollars.
China is Mexico's second trading partner, and there is also great potential to detonate other businesses in the commerce, agriculture and technology sectors.
With the project that Vice President Harris is now promoting, it breaks China's participation in the three major projects that the government of President López Obrador is promoting in southern Mexico: The Mayan Train and the Trans-Pacific Corridor (Trans-isthmic) and the Dos Bocas Refinery. where in the latter four desalination plants were installed in each of the desalination packages for each of the two trains of the refinery's combined silver. These critical equipment were imported from Weifan, China, which will be used to remove salt from crude oil.
For the United States, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec is strategic in the commercial security plan for supply chains that President Biden is promoting, since American companies can reduce costs in the price of fuels, the increases in the Panama Canal rates , and will promote the logistics corridors of the East and West coast of the American Union. Mexico can absorb a part of the commercial traffic of the Asia-West Coast route of the United States.
With the investment of companies from the American Union, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec is immersed in the commercial security of its supply chains from Biden, for this they have to displace Chinese investment in southern Mexico.
