(edit) I can't be quoted here, but I believe that when you are given certs, not only do you have to send them back to your broker, if you want to trade them, it might even cost you a fee. If that is true, then that's a rotten thing for the brokers to do to make extra cash from accounts. Especially if one did not request them themselves
