There once was a company, Energy Conversion Devices (ENER) that was storing the hydrogen in a nickel metal hydride powder. The reason was the spaces inside the powder material made room for hydrogen atoms to be stored safely at normal temperatures. When the hydrogen levels were low enough, the powder could be reloaded in about the same time frame as a gas tank. They were working on many great ideas, but somehow they were bought out and just abandoned about 20 years ago. It was around the time of W. Disappointing.
