...why would insiders have been so recently active?? Therefore I favor hypothesis #2.

FCX would most certainly like to explore other Arizona properties given their existing infrastructure/operations/familiarity with the geology. I expect they and other prospective partners were waiting on all the alignments (share structure, ZTEM, etc) as newuser has suggested.

I GOT SHARES --reloaded all yesterday after trading around a nice pop to $1.8-$2.0
