I was doing a triple arthrodesis foot surgery that required an iliac crest aspiration to mix with some bone chips. The bone aspiration needle was a basically a large plastic device with a needle to harvest from the hip. The device was $285 just for a disposable piece of plastic. My point is the mark up on healthcare products is absolutely ridiculous. A trocar for a laparoscopic cholecystectomy(gallbladder) run $300 each. Now hospitals are reprocessing them to save on costs.
Bottom line, it is a revenue stream. DaVinci arms can only be used a certain number of times and then they are discarded. Disposables are where the money is made.
