In HIV, a sterilizing cure eliminates all HIV from the body - what most think of as a cure. Only the Berlin patient Timothy Brown and now The London Patient have been cured of HIV, after stem cell transplant. A functional cure is not having any HIV in blood .. undetectable viral load .. on no treatment, no symptoms of AIDS, but probably still have traces of HIV in the body .. in gut mucosa, or certain long lived memory or stem type immune cells.

It has a specific meaning in HIV. They didn't think they could eradicate HIV from the body, just sop it up with nanoviral traps when it emerges, to the point where it stays dormant and never emerges again.

HIVcide couldn't go into cells to cut out dormant HIV retroviral code or eliminate already infected cells. It would be believed to kill the virus outside of cells.

Ah, so much fun arguing semantics and rehashing history.

But cure has definite meanings in certain situations. Saying one has a cure for every virus is different from hoping to have a treatment, or hoping for a functional not sterilizing cure in HIV.
