There's a distinction between...

enrolled and randomized in a clinical trial. Once a patient agrees and is enrolled in a clinical trial, they undergo the screening process. If they pass the screening process, they undergo randomization to determine whether they will receive the drug candidate or placebo, after which treatment ensues. Those who are enrolled yet never randomized are screen failures. Over enrollment in a clinical trial can be a buffer against screen failures, allowing the randomized trial population to meet the 120 patient protocol.

There are sundry reasons an enrolled patient can fail their screen. It's my understanding it's a common occurrence.
