Brazil consolidates itself as one of the world's leading eSports powers

A global audience and fundraising phenomenon, eSports (e-sports) have proven that they are here to stay. According to Newzoo, a consulting firm specializing in analyzing the e-sports market, last year alone global eSports revenues in live streaming totaled the amount of $947.1 million.

Brazil, Latin America's main power in the segment, has a very important participation in the global electronic sports market. A country with continental dimensions and a people fanatic for eSports, Brazil owns the third largest public market in the world and lags only behind great powers such as China and the United States.

According to Newzoo, Brazil has 21.2 million eSports fans. Within this total, 12 million are part of the occasional audience and 9.2 million are considered enthusiasts (those who follow electronic sports frequently).

Some effects of the high popularity of eSports in Brazil

This large number of regular followers reflects the audience of the main eSports championships organized in the country. Last year, the final of the Brazilian Free Fire League, one of the most popular mobile games on Brazilian soil, broke a record for simultaneous audience. According to the website GE, the decision of the national Free Fire championship had 60 million views and had a peak of 460,000 simultaneous viewers.

The growth of eSports in Brazil has also influenced the national sports betting landscape. Not for nothing, internationally renowned gambling sites have on their platforms several options to bet on different modalities of electronic sports.

One of the pioneering companies in eSports in the segment was Betway, an eSports bets website, which in 2015 became known as the first major company in the industry to invest exclusively in electronic sports. In addition to having dozens of markets on its platform to bet on eSports, Betway sponsors tournaments and major teams in the world, such as the Brazilian MIBR.

It is also worth highlighting the relevant participation of some of the main soccer teams in Brazil with the sport. The biggest example of this partnership between the two worlds is Flamengo, which has one of the best electronic sports teams in Latin America, Flamengo Esports. According to Datafolha research (2019), the Rio team leads the national ranking of fans with 20% — that is, one in five Brazilians who are interested in soccer are fans of the Red-Black team.

This approach of football with eSports, as Flamengo has done in recent years, makes fans more interested in the sport. Thus, this combination between the football public and electronic sports aims to achieve greater engagement for the sector in less time.

In April of this year, Flamengo played in the semifinal of the Brazilian League of Legends Championship 2021 (1st split) against the paiN team. In the confrontation between the two teams there was a peak of 329,000 simultaneous spectators, one of the largest recorded in the history of the competition.

Rondônia is one of the states in the Northern Region with the highest representation in eSports

In recent years, Rondônia has revealed high-level competitors in the Brazilian eSports scene. One of the biggest representatives of the state in the segment is the phenomenon Rodrigo "El Gato" Fernandes, one of the best Free Fire players today. At the age of 24, the Rondonian won a legion of fans around the country in his lives playing the game.

Another Rondonian highlight is the player Júlio Paz, better known as “Poizon”. Player in the game League of Legends, the Rondonian is part of the Fortaleza E-Sports team, one of the main electronic sports teams in the Northeast.

As in other states of Brazil, football clubs in Rondônia are also investing in the sector. Last year, Porto Velho started its project in the sport and became the first football team in the capital of Rondonia to open an eSports team.

In 2021, Barcelona de Rondônia followed the same example and kicked off in electronic sports — the project was born from a partnership with Alpha Gg. According to Ricardo Aparecido, one of the team's management members, the idea is to popularize the brand throughout Brazil in the coming years.
