I suggest that it is wise to wait a few months, maybe until next September, before opening up all schools to business as usual.
Yes, in terms of education and socializing it has been a massive setback for school children, particularly for those in lower income households who cannot afford “education pods” or WiFi or whose parents may have to work away from home during Covid and can’t juggle the time to provide sufficient at home support for stay-at-home learning.
I can tell you from personal experience that it really hurts when one of your parents gets sick and dies within a few weeks of getting ill when you are young.
The Covid pandemic could be compared to the 1918 pandemic, which followed on the heels of World War One, or to the Great Depression in terms of its effects on the generation that grew up under those harsh conditions then went on to fight during World War Two, and became known as “The Great Generation.”

Side note: I wonder if the “Roaring Twenties” that followed the end of both WWI and the 1918 flu pandemic will be echoed when most people in the US get vaccinated
