My ATT shares, obtained via inheritance from my wife's family, long predate the 1984 breakup. There were many spinoffs and some re-combinations too. Many name changes. Remember Lucent Technologies? Verizon still exists. There was Bell South and NYNEX. Many more. What a mess! AT&T even had a humiliating 1 for 5 REVERSE split around 2002!

The $64 Question: How much would, say, $10,000 in AT&T stock in 1983 be worth today counting everything? I've never seen an exact answer but I read a few years ago that the total would have grown nicely but be somewhat less than the S&P 500's growth since 1984. Selling AT&T before the breakup and going into a nice index fund would have been easier/wiser than holding all the "Bell Children."

I'll never sell my T shares because it's easier to die with them, collecting dividends, than to figure the complex tax liability on a sale.
