Another factor to consider is that the legal fees in the Samsung case exceeded the value of the trial win, thereby rendering the legal battle a moot process. That combined with the "bad faith" displayed by Samsung, gave the Court the opportunity to make things right. Plaintiffs wouldn't generally pursue legal actions if the awards were less than the legal fees.

In this particular case, absent the Court having Samsung pay the legal fees, for the most part it would have been a worthless effort on the part of the plaintiff. If the trial win had produced a win of $100 million, it's possible the Court may not have ordered the legal fees paid by Samsung. The Court looks at the totality of the circumstances.
