It's a very daunting process. He more than likely tried looking for traces of cold and hot wallets. He could've searched through hard drives, emails, and documents for key information or tried retracing. The following article describes a few ways to look for it. That's probably why it took so long. I do hope he wins a lawsuit against Bill Schaefer for this once the company is back on its feet.
