Elevated GM-CSF levels are correlated with cytokine storm and ARDS in severe covid and other conditions. Correlation is not causation as I am sure you know.

GM-CSF is upstream and it causes other cytokines to happen. It is the only cytokine that is elevated before the other cytokines happen. It is a correlation that is likely indicating causation. These articles support this stance:
