BioNano Genomics (NASDAQ:BNGO) is worth investors' attention because it makes a device called the Saphyr, which analyzes genomes in a way that no other single genome sequencer machine can. To be more specific, it is capable of detecting large structural variations in genomes, which is typically an arduous task for researchers. While many sequencers and other laboratory techniques can duplicate portions of the Saphyr's output, the Saphyr automates the process and brings all of the disparate methods under one hood, so it's a major time-saver for clinical and research staff.

Like Illumina, its equipment needs a constant supply of kits for customers to get the data they crave. So its revenue has a significant recurring component which will grow with time as it develops more and more options for applications, though it isn't profitable just yet. Importantly, BioNano's product is a key tool in an actively advancing area of genomic science. Its research partners are investigating a plethora of different conditions using its hardware, including Alzheimer's disease, leukemia, and Lou Gehrig's disease (also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS). As more pathologies are linked to the large structural variations that the Saphyr detects, BioNano's unique niche will prove more and more lucrative.
