Aside from the recent NFT trend, investors have inexplicably bid up the prices of bankrupt companies such as Hertz Rent-a-Car and J.C. Penney. Kirk Ruddy, a former bankruptcy claims trader, told the Los Angeles Times last June that the phenomenon is likely due to investors buying stocks purely because they recognize the company name and like the low price. “If you look at the markets in general, people don’t know where to put their money. They are like, ‘Hey, I’m going to try that $.001 stock,’” he said.
