I will give it a shot. They buy shares from market and make a market for you and I as they sell them to and buy them from us. They are a middle man.
Market Makers make money from buying shares at a lower price to which they sell them. This is the bid/offer spread. The more actively a share is traded the more money a Market Maker makes. The market makers are the grease to the system for stock trading. They keep it flowing.
