**ETIQUETTE** "Please pass the jelly"

It is correct to reach for anything on the table that doe not necessitate stretching across your neighbor or leaning far across the table yourself. when something is out of reach, simply ask the person nearest to it, "Would you please pass the jelly, Sprintcar?" When an accompaniment that is ordinarily served -- butter for the bread, mustard for the ham, salt and pepper, etc. --is not on the table, it is undoubtedly an oversight. You may ask your hostess, "Do you have any mustard, Lance?" or "Could we have a little butter for the rolls?" You should not, however, ask for anything unusual, or something that your host or hostess might not have on hand.

Items should be passed from person to person or if they are awkward to pass, put down on the table so that the next person can easily pick them up. Serving dishes with handles and such items as cream pitchers should be passed with the handle toward the person receiving it to facilitate his or her taking it.
