Purge beat: Many Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales
At the Los Angeles Times, Gustavo Arellano speaks up for much-maligned cartoon character Speedy Gonzales, who “blazed through my childhood like a sombrero-clad comet, terrorizing gringo villains in the name of us downtrodden Mexicans.”
Sure, “Polite society . . . tried everything possible to dim his star — but we Mexicans always fought loudly against any attempts to cancel our compadre.” They’re doing it again after New York Times writer Charles Blow renewed the complaints. Speedy’s four Oscar nominations ties him with Anthony Quinn for the most by any Mexican star.
And, because “Mexican American animators worked on nearly half” his cartoons, “He danced our dances and dressed like a jarocho (a native of Veracruz).” Heck, “He was the only Mexican in Hollywood I knew who never lost — well, him and Cheech and Chong.”
Econ watch: $15 Wage Will Cost 1M Jobs
“Raising the minimum wage will definitely cost jobs,” warns economist David Neumark at The Wall Street Journal. The Congressional Budget Office “estimated that 1.4 million jobs would be lost if” Democrats’ $15 federal minimum wage became law, yet critics “were quick to dismiss the CBO’s conclusion.” Neumark’s “extensive survey of research on minimum wages and job loss” in America backs up the CBO. “The results are stark. Across all studies, 79 percent report that minimum wages reduced employment.” The “odds of nearly 80 percent of studies finding negative employment effects if the true effect is zero is less than one in a million.” Bottom line: Minimum-wage laws bring “a substantial reduction in employment,” especially for “the lowest earners most directly affected by raising the minimum wage.”

The “much-hyped, much-cited” new Office of the Director of National Intelligence report, Foreign Threats to the 2020 Elections, comes with a remarkable “caveat at the end,” notes Matt Taibbi at TK News, namely: “Judgments are not intended to imply that we have proof that shows something to be a fact.” Says Taibbi: “We’ve spent the last five years watching as anonymous officials make major Russia-related claims, only to have those evidence-free claims fizzle,” from the “changed RNC platform” tale to “Michael Cohen’s alleged secret meetings in Prague with Russian conspirators” and beyond. In fact, “the clear aim of this report is to cast certain stories about Joe or Hunter Biden as misinformation, when the evidence more likely shows that material like the Hunter Biden emails is real.”
Libertarian: Cops Should Not Patrol Hate Speech
Mayor de Blasio “suggested that one way to combat anti-Asian hate would be for the New York Police Department to warn people not to be hateful,” fumes Reason’s Robby Soave. “Hate speech is in fact protected by the First Amendment,” and “unless you’re committing a crime, your actions are no business of the government’s.” And giving cops more reasons to knock on doors increases “the chances of a bad encounter.” Without immense trust “between cops and the communities they serve,” de Blasio’s proposal “is likely to worsen the problem.” Anyway, “cops’ time is better spent investigating violent crime than warning people not to be haters.”
Conservative: Woke Mob’s Latest Victims
Alexi McCammond, derailed from running Teen Vogue magazine, was the latest “burnt offering” to the “crazed, lusty mob” publicly burning witches “at the stake in the town square,” snarks The Washington Times’ Charles Hurt. McCammond’s sins? “Twitter messages she wrote as a college freshman over a decade ago,” indicating only that she’s a “former idiot young person in college who typed stupid, idiotic messages on social media.” But “there is, literally, no travesty on Earth these twisted maggots won’t exploit to push their rotten political agenda.” Now they’re twisting the “horrific murders” at Atlanta massage parlors to fit into “their preconceived fever dreams about some kind of war on ‘Asian-Americans.’ ” That “there is no evidence whatsoever to support their racist conspiracy theories” has done “little to dampen the mob’s enthusiasm for their imagined war.”
