I take in as much information as possible then make up my mind. Charts are depictions of history. That history is not another stock's history, but sometimes you can draw parallels. I read an article about the Doji star. It gives you a little better odds than pure chance. To act on it like it is a portent of the future is a mistake, but if you are cluelss, then it might be good to invest based on it.
