I’m 99% sure it’s just old data. Someone gathers it and sells it to people who produce these “reports”. They milk it for years. The market for these reports are people who are creating business plans and presentations etc. they just need enough data to draw conclusions and sound informed.

Of course the only other viable alternative would be as you mentioned- a continuation of a purchased trade name.

The notion that this is indicative that some researcher is privy to a financial transaction that the rest of the market is not is absolutely ludicrous.
