Breeze Airways gets federal approval to launch

The U.S. Transportation Department issued final approval for new aviation startup Breeze Airways to take to the skies.

With federal approval Breeze can start flying and will initially use leased Embraer jets from Brazilian carrier Azul.

Breeze has ordered dozens of larger Airbus 220-300 planes.

The airline was founded by David Neeleman, who also co-founded JetBlue and Azul.

The startup's strategy is to 'bring low-cost, nonstop services to mid-size markets abandoned by our current air transportation network.'

It said it will focus on secondary leisure markets but hasn't yet disclosed which city pairs it plans to serve.

"These markets in many cases support once a day service or service a select few days of the week. Over time the routes will cover the entire country."

Neeleman has promised Breeze will be 'the world's nicest airline.'

Operations are based in Utah while its corporate headquarters are at Darien, Connecticut.
