43 patients in LL group
19 patients in Placebo group

You need to establish a common denominator;

43/19 = 2.263 is your multiplier

Now equalize the numerator (on the Placebo side) by multiplying with the above multiplier

7*2.263 = 15.84 ~ 16 is your new mortality number.

LL mortality: 12
Placebo mortality: 16

Difference = 4

Reducing 4 from 16 provides you with just under 25% mortality reduction.

These are four less people who dies in a group of 43 (equivalent)

But then you need to divide 4 by 2.263 because the placebo group has 19 patients, not 43. 4 divided by 2.263 = 1.76. So if 1.76 fewer patients died in the placebo arm of the critical/vent group, that 24% improvement would change to 0%. If 2 fewer died out of the 19, the placebo arm would have had a lower mortality rate than the leron arm with the crit/vent. And this is the best cherrypicked data they could find!
