Then you didn't understand or haven't worked in a large company. The person who was probably in charge of buying the domain may have been a secretary, a friend in the company in early stages...anyone, even the owner. It's just registering a domain name that anyone could do...and depending where the registration email goes, they may have not received the alert, and only became aware of it when people noticed it went down.

Trust me when I say even well known companies have this happen all the time because its easily overlooked. The person who registered it could also not be with them anymore.

The IT manager...their hands are filled many responsibilities in the thousands that something like that is not on their lists of tasks. It really is the dumbest thing to happen, but it happens countless times every year, with one just about 2 weeks ago of another well known company. Focus on keeping the million dollar part of the company running, but forget to fix the 50 cent part of the company.
