Let’s be clear, NMs are rarely the bad guy and , with the exception of a few who are broker/dealers also, are simply order takers. 85% of the trading is performed via broker/dealers who can not be on both sides of a trade, thus they form a ‘co op’ usually for specific stocks and often all gang up on a really big fish for shorting and naked shorting. When a situation develops wherein ‘death is imminent’ for a stock, the reality that they will never need to cover is like blood in the water for ‘naked short’ sharks.
