Lluka: Kosovo and Albania should cooperate closely in the field of energy

ormer Minister of Economic Development, Valdrin Lluka, told the newspaper "Epoka e re" that cooperation in the field of energy between Kosovo and Albania is very necessary, especially in terms of building a hydropower plant in Albania, where according to him, both countries would then be potential energy exporters to the region.

"Kosovo must work closely with Albania to jointly build a hydropower plant in Albania to be used for balancing needs, reserves and exports. All these policies would make Kosovo and Albania not only sustainable in the energy sector but also potential exporters in the region. Today Kosovo imports about 50 million euros a year of electricity, mainly from Serbia, therefore, permanent energy independence from Serbia and building our internal capacity to create national security of energy supply should be a priority for every government, including the incoming government ", said Lluka.

He further added that electricity is the alpha and omega of the proper functioning of the economy and the behavior of foreign investors. "Energy is the oxygen, water and food of a country's economy. Without energy stability there is no sustainable economic development, especially for countries rich in various minerals such as Kosovo and countries that have the potential to use cheap labor for production. Therefore, for each government, energy should be the primary focus, along equal lines with education and health. "Energy instability makes it impossible for long-term and serious investors to behave in Kosovo."

"Various European companies, which express interest in moving their production from Western Europe to regions with lower operating costs, such as the Western Balkans, have as a precondition stability and abundant energy supply, at competitive costs. "While Kosovo is doing well with the cost of electricity, we have two other essential problems: 1. Energy stability and 2. Natural gas supply," said Lluka.

He also talked about the pipeline and investment opportunities in it. "Investing in the gas pipeline from Albania to Kosovo and from Skopje to Pristina is also necessary. The pipeline from Skopje can be installed in a short period of time as such a pipeline existed in the 70s, while the one with Albania is more of a strategic and long-term investment for the country. Large consumers of energy in production, in most cases use gas for their own needs. Such consumers are those in the field of mining, mainly in mineral processing where added value is the greatest potential in Kosovo, then producers of glass products, tiles, blocks and such materials to producers of metal and wood. he said.

According to Lluka, the next government should focus on creating new energy generation capacities, and not investing in obsolete plants.

"To create energy stability in the country, we must invest in new energy capacities in the combination of renewable energy and coal, gradually closing the Kosovo A power plant, and completely renovating the Kosovo B power plant. Also investing in a new power plant with smaller capacities and advanced technologies as well as increasing the number of renewable energy licenses combined from that with solar and wind. "The Kosova A power plant is inefficient, unsafe and very outdated, because it was built in 1962, therefore any attempt for renovation will bring failure in energy stability", said Lluka.
