The coronavirus is very likely here to stay, even after the pandemic officially ends. The virus will continue to have opportunities to evolve; in its myriad forms, it will cross paths with many of us again and again. “Reinfections are probably something we’re going to have to get used to.” But virus and human will grow accustomed to each other, reaching something of a détente; immunity will, over time, build like a seawall. If repeat infections tell us anything, it’s that the less the virus mutates, the longer we’ll be able to protect ourselves against it.
